Booking Through Thursday

This week's question:

Have your book-tastes changed over the years? More fiction? Less? Books that are darker and more serious? Lighter and more frivolous? Challenging? Easy? How-to books over novels? Mysteries over Romance?

Well since graduating from college, my book reading has changed from 10 pound textbooks with $150 pricetags back to leisure reading. More than anything, I'd say book blogging has changed the amount and type of reading I do. Before blogging, I was looking for ways to get more book recommendations. I would have trouble finding books I liked at the library. Now my wishlist is so long its a wonder I make any progress at all.

I've read my first graphic novel recently (and enjoyed it immensely). Pretty much every book I've read because of "My Year of Reading Dangerously" have been books I would not have normally read. I love that! Even if every book hasn't thrilled me, at least it gets me out of my reading rut.

One thing that hasn't changed is my enjoyment of YA fiction. I loved it as a teenager, and I thought I'd grow out of it eventually, but that hasn't been the case so far. I just realized the other day that I've already read the 12 books required for the YA reading challenge. I don't think that will stop me from reading more, but gosh, already?

One big change for me is that I used to read a lot more science fiction than I have been reading these days. Personally, I think the Sci-Fi Experience should have lasted longer.

Book blogging has changed my reading preferences too! Now not only do I have to worry about the spending, but also the storage as well!

Blogging has made more aware of my reading habit. I find so many interesting books on the book blogs!

I started as a big fan of science fiction and fantasy but I'm having trouble finding good books in the genre these days. There's something about them that just doesn't click with me. I love Andre Norton and have just discovered Orson Scott Card.

Mine's up

Here's what I wrote about this week's meme: http://susanflynn.blogspot.com/2008/06/booking-through-thursday.html
What a fun booking, this week! I like your answer, too. Money spent, indeed! though I never had a problem in that area....it's more Melody's answer, now I need more shelves!!

I never read YA as a teen so I'm just now discovering how many great books are out there. Kind of opposite of you. Since blogging I have found so many great books and authors that I can't keep up with them all. Somebody once told me that they had run out of books to read, that there was nothing left. Can you imagine?!

The nice thing about doing book reviews in a blog form rather than for a magazine is that you only need to write about what you like. So it becomes more of a book recommendation than a book review. I suppose.

Re: YA, I've never grown out of it either, because some of the best writing is in the young adult section. I just finished reading Mortal Engines to my girlfriend (my second reading) and it's a fantastic piece of work, with good people, bad people, and good things happening to bad people and bad things happening to good people. The only reason I can tell that it's in the Young Adult section is because it's easy to read, but that's certainly no crime.

I read a lot of YA fiction, too, as well as children's literature. That's probably because I'm an elementary school teacher, but there is something so lovely about those books that I wouldn't ever want to give up.

melody-so true. I've kept things trimmed down by utilizing my library quite a bit, because the books are piling up.

gautami tripathy-me too!

cj-well I have just gotten into Orson Scott Card as well, and I think he does great science fiction. Hopefully you'll find more that you like!

susan-my problem is that I have no space to put the shelves. I barely have room for the shelves I do have!

natasha-they had run out of books to read??? Ummm.... not possible. I'm very sure of that!

emanuel nordrum-I definitely agree with you on the YA fiction. To attract and hold the attention of teenagers, a book has to be very good. In my opinion, for a book to make it to the YA shelf at a bookstore, it has to be even better than adult fiction. Look how many shelves of adult fiction there are compared to YA! Much more competitive

bellezza-I would not want to give them up either. They are great reads!

I agree that the 'My Year of Reading Dangerously' has been good for getting me to read books I'd previously stayed away from for whatever reason.
And my wishlist is so long there's no way I'd ever be able to buy all the books, much less read them!

Another great YA Fiction book that I have recommended to many people is One Foot in the Black. It's an action/adventure with a twist of dysfunctional family thrown in. I loved it.

While I still like many of the same genres, like you blogging has helped me stretch myself and find new genres that I also like (for me it is fantasy--something I wouldn't have even touched earlier). Great answers! And man I don't miss those school book buying days either!! :)
