Marketing FAIL

The Sci Fi channel will now become the SyFy channel.

Yes.

The SyFy channel.

There are no words.

Seriously.

I know that the Sci Fi channel has produced very little as of late that could be called science fiction. But really.

Really??

You couldn't come up with anything more clever than substituting different vowels? Did you all get together, have a little too much wine and decide around 2am that this was a smart idea? When you woke up in the morning with a hangover, that should have been your cue.

Oh sci-fi channel. You used to be cool.

Interesting story. They bought the copyright to the SyFy name off of a science-fiction news site that used to be known as SyFy Portal (now Airlock Alpha). I used to help the owner of the site out back in the day (like 7-10 years ago).

My favourite bit, from this article:

“When we tested this new name, the thing that we got back from our 18-to-34 techno-savvy crowd, which is quite a lot of our audience, is actually this is how you’d text it,” Mr. Howe said. “It made us feel much cooler, much more cutting-edge, much more hip, which was kind of bang-on what we wanted to achieve communication-wise.”

BWAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHA. Yes, much "cooler"! So "cutting-edge"! *bangs head on desk"

The whole article left me speechless. Apparently they're convinced that geeks have cooties.

I think I may have to boycott the new "SyFY" Channel.

Just too sad!

Hahahahaha!!! I love the quote from Nymeth. Especially the part about being "hip." Just how "cool" are you if you're bragging about being "hip?" :)
