There really wasn't any way I could say no to R.I.P. IV, was there? I didn't think so. September 1-October 31, the goal is to read scary books and scary stories. Even if you don't "do" challenges, this is a great one to try. There are six categories: Mystery, Suspense, Dark Fantasy, Gothic, Horror, Supernatural, and various levels of the challenge.
So far, I'm keeping my options pretty open on my reading list. I've got a few options, but I'm waiting to see what other people are recommending.
My book pool:
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (Horror)... classic tale about a horrifying monster
Fledgling by Octavia Butler (Supernatural)... something sci fi-ish with vampires.
The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carie Ryan (Supernatural)... something else with vampires.
Magic for Beginners by Kelly Link (Dark Fantasy)... nymeth has it on her list, and she rarely steers me wrong
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafron (Mystery). Something about the Spanish Civil War and the devil, and a cemetery of lost books. Delectable.
Any top recommendations?

It's hard to say no to this challenge, isn't it?
I'd highly recommend The Ghost Writer by John Harwood! It's one of my favourite reads this year!!
Some fantastic books there!! I LOVED Forest of Hands and Teeth and Frankenstein is a favorite too :) Have fun!!!
I have Fledgling on my list this year too!
I'll second Melody's suggestion. :D And toss in We Have Always Lived in the Castle-it's a short read but super creepy. Oh, and A Fine and Private Place is a ghost story that's tender instead of scary.
Must stop self now!
Ooh, I'm reading Frankenstein and The Shadow of the Wind too! Hope you enjoy them.
Oooh, I forgot to put The Forest of Hands and Teeth on my list and I REALLY want to read that one! I have Fledgling on my list, too...and am looking forward to it a lot. Hope you enjoy Frankenstein more than I did, but then I'm sure you will as I seem to be in the minority on that one. And while Eva seconded Melody's suggestion, I'm going to second Eva's...We Have Always Lived in a Castle is wonderful!!! Have fun, Kim!
I hope we both enjoy Magic for Beginners! I want to read Fledgling too.
Have fun with the challenge, Kim! I finished the first book (SHUTTER ISLAND) for the challenge yesterday.
Great peril pool! I think you'll REALLY like The Shadow of the Wind, and I looooved Frankenstein, though it wasn't exactly what I expected having watched movie version.
Oh, Shadow of the Wind! I'm reading that one right now--guess I can count it, too. :P
I haven't officially joined this one yet, but plan to. Frankenstein is an interesting one--look forward to hearing what you think.
Glad you are joining this one. I think I want to read everything in your pool! There are so many great books out there that qualify for this. There is the new Patricia Briigs Hunting Ground which I hope to read very soon.
