Twilight: Mini-Review

The second in a series of mini-reviews because my lazy butt is way behind on book reviews.

Twilight by Stephanie Meyer
Reason for Reading: To be like all the cool kids who are reading Twilight
Rating: 3/5

Girl meets angsty vampire. Girl, and angsty vampire, for some inexplicable reason, fall obsessively in love. Angsty vampire inadvertently sets up girl as lunch for other hungry vampire. Girl, despite angsty vampire's family's best efforts to save her life seems determined to fall into hands of hungry vampire. SPOILER: Angsty vampire shows up just in time to save girl's life and they go to prom.

What is left to say about Twilight that hasn't already been said? Yes, its true. Some of the writing leaves much to be desired (does she keep having to refer to Edward's 'alabastor brow'? Seriously, how many teenagers know the word 'alabastor'?). Bella is, deep down, kind of annoying and whiny. But at least their obsessiveness for each other is matched.

Still. There is a reason these books are so popular and I'm not going to deny they are hard to put down. My favorite character is Edward's sister Alice, who adopts Bella as her friend immediately. And Charlie, her dad, is pretty cool too.

Should I read it? If you can live with the fact they don't live up to the hype.

Hilarious that you read this because I just bought it last night, lol. I swore I'd never read these, but it looks like I am now. It is in fact an addicting book, but at the same time, there are some things that just make me say "an explanation please?"

Just can't bring myself to go there...

Alice is my favorite character too. Although I wish I hadn't known so much about the books going into them, I was at least prepared for the fact that the books were not going to blow me away. Still they're fun to read.

LOL!! My best friend gave me her copy and told me I have to have it read by the end of the month. I don't know if it will happen THIS month, but I'll at least give it a shot for her. I don't really want to, though...

Apart from Edward, Alice is my favourite character too. I know I'd love to be in Bella's shoes, but she's not my fav character. I read the book way before the hype started so I loved it then. I think I still do now. :D

I loved Alice too!! My kids dragged me to the movie and they did very well casting her. She was exactly how I pictured her.

Whiny was my desription of Bella. She is more so in the next book. I haven't read the last 2 yet, but I will. The one thing I can definitely say about Meyer's. She can definitely tell a story! They really are hard to put down. Personally, I liked The Host better. Still...these are fun!

Ah touche! Interestingly Bella didn't annoy me anywhere near as much in the film. Credit to the actress!

chris-yeah, there are a lot of things I'd like explained. Like why does Edward have to be extra beautiful in the sunlight? Why can't he be scary-looking?

debi-do you feel the need to justify yourself sometimes? I think the Twilight-haters feel this way.

Literary Feline-Yes, emphasis on fun. Maybe not intellectual. But fun.

Trish-there's worse things to read, if that helps.

Alice Teh-well if you got started on them before the hype, maybe they were more enjoyable!

Stephanie-I think I might try The Host, but I need a rest after I finish the rest of the Twilight books.

mariel-too true. I think they did a good job in the movie, although I was still left wondering what exactly, made Bella so obsessive.

I've been listening to Twilight on audiobook, and I think that makes the repetitive writing more funny than frustrating. I mean, I get Edward is beautiful and that they have drama and that Bella swoons all the time. But it's seriously addictive, I get that now too.
