Thursday! (i.e. Booking Through)

Who is your favorite female lead character? And why? (And yes, of course, you can name more than one . . . I always have trouble narrowing down these things to one name, why should I force you to?)

Well, I've always been partial to Hermione. She's so smart, funny, and manages to keep Harry and Ron in line (and prevent them from failing their classes).

Another character that struck me was Anna from My Sister's Keeper (by Jodi Picoult). Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match so she could be a bone marrow donor for her older sister Kate, who suffers from leukemia. As a teenager, Kate sues her parents for medical independence so she can decide for herself whether to be a donor to Kate. Kate's life hangs in the balance as the court case proceeds. This was a compelling read and Anna's strength in the face of an impossible situation impressed me.

And finally, I have to add that I love Sabriel from the Abhorsen books by Garth Nix. She is just plain awesome, always kicking some Dead Hand and necromancer butt with her bells. (If that sounds at all intriguing, read the books.

How about walking through the seven gates of the afterlife and daring to be drawn into it yourself? Garth Nix. They were a fresh idea in fantasy novels that I hadn't seen since Tolkien. Oh and if I can, I recommend Ted Dekker too.

Hmmm ... I've never heard of them.

I played too :)

Ooooh, I loved Sabriel...the Abhorsen trilogy was one of my favorite fantasy series in a long time...I really wish he'd write more books in that series...another trilogy perhaps ;)

I loved My Sister's Keeper, Anna was brilliant!

Sabriel DOES sound intruiging... Thanks!

What a coincidence, Kim! I too loved Anna...she's a brave girl IMO.

Well, you're the second person to mention Anna. Sounds like I ought to give that book a try! I've never read anything by Picoult, but I do have a couple of hers sitting on my shelves. Oh my, the whole too little time thing...

Hermione is an excellent pick. And although I like Lirael even better(I got over being upset that a new protagonist was introduced in the second book pretty quickly), Sabriel also rocks.

andy-so true. I admire those books a lot.

teena-well they are all books worth checking out!

chris-I agree! There was a novella he wrote about Nicholas, its in a short story collection of his (the name escapes me now) but it hardly takes place at all in the Old Kingdom. I think he should take the time to properly revisit it.

joanna-it is a great series, I recommend it highly. It stuck with me so vividly I had dreams about it.

Melody-great minds think alike

debi-luckily the books read pretty quickly. I challenge you to put them down once you pick them up!

nymeth-I do like Lirael as well, after she got more confident in herself. At first she was kind of whiny.

I'm currently remembering why I like Aragorn so much -- and even Frodo, too.

Rorschach from Watchmen is a fascinating guy, though not entirely likable.

And pretty much any protagonist in a Stephen Lawhead novel.

The short story collection is Across the Wall. I have that one, but I haven't read it yet...I've been saving it to savor The Old Kingdom :p Just in case he never revisits it, lol. That way I'll always have one more story left!

aaron-I really liked Stephen Lawhead's Pendragon series-read it a few times. What books of his do you like?

chris-I kept thinking the title was Across The Hedge... but I knew that wasn't quite right. Anyhow, its worth savoring. Its different from the other books, but still good.

I loved My Sister's Keeper. I thought it was a phenomenal book, and it cemented Picoult as one of my favorite authors. Great answers!

I love Sabriel as well. I really need to read My Sisters Keeper and I think I must be the only person who hasn't read it yet...

Hermione, what a good choice. I would have thought of Scout or Offred, I think. But I do love Hermione.

stephanie-yes I agree-she knows how to make you turn the pages compulsively.

rhinoa-yup pretty sure you're the ONLY one. J/K, I'm sure you're not, although it is a great book if you like thrillers.

dewey-Both are excellent choices as well. Hermione sticks out in my mind because you get to know her so well from reading all 7 books. At the end of The Handmaid's Tale, Offred is still a little mysterious, I think.
