What? Another Challenge?

I have been trying hard not to get involved in more challenges than I can handle, but this one called my name. Literally. I heard it say "Kim, join this challenge!"

The challenge: Read 5 classics July 1-December 31. Recommend a 6th book that you think is a modern classic.

Okay, here's my list (completely subject to change based on my whim)

The Grapes of Wrath
Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Animal Farm by George Orwell
I Am Legend by Richard Matheson
Winnie the Pooh by AA Milne

And my nominations for modern classics are:
White Oleander by Janet Fitch
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens (okay just kidding)

And with no further ado, the Classics Meme:

1. My favorite classic is
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. It just doesn't get any better.

2. The classic I had the toughest time finishing is
Wuthering Heights. Great Expectations took some extra effort, but Wuthering Heights was almost impossible. It's long, boring, and very unhappy.

3. I would recommend Animal Farm to someone who doesn't read a lot of classics or who doesn't generally like classics because its very engrossing, and even better, short.

4. To me, a classic book is a book that has been around for at least a couple of decades and is on recommended reading lists.

5. The type of relationship I have with classics is amenable. I like classics. I usually enjoy them. I always intend to read more of them and never get around to it.

I felt the same way about Wuthering Heights. Animal Farm is a good pick! I chose 1984, but both are great. I love Orwell. I hope you enjoy all your challenge picks.

I've signed up for this too - I've stayed away from Classics during my adult life so I'm looking forward to rediscovering them - and reading some that are new to me

Yay for P&P! I didn't like Animal Farm too much, but I loved 1984 and I really super-duper love Orwell's essays. You have a very eclectic list there-should be fun. :D

I'm just about to finish Love in a Time of Cholera - it's gothic, it's spellbinding. Marquez has language at his fingertips. Enjoy this challenge. I think I've got more than I can chew at the moment!

I actually enjoyed Wuthering Heights when I read it back in high school...but that was a very looooong time ago. Wonder what I'd think of it now. You've got a great list picked out for the challenge. I'm having a really hard time making my picks for this one...I really have to be in the mood for a classic.

Oh, I love Pride and Prejudice. Now that's what I'd call a true classics! I haven't got around to reading Wuthering Heights yet, since I've been hearing mixed reviews about this.

OH, but there is SO much passion in Wuthering Heights. I AM HEATHCLIFF. *sigh* Ok, I may be the only person alive who likes the book. Great list Kim, and I'm glad you couldn't resist. ;)

nymeth-me too! I tried hard to pick ones that were SHORT so that even if I didn't love them, at least they'd be over quickly.

mrs s-great, this will be a fun challenge then!

eva-that's interesting. I read Animal Farm a really long time ago and I remember enjoying it more than 1984. We'll see what I think this time around.

seachanges-I know how you feel! I've got more than I can chew, really.

debi-interesting. I can't think of a single thing I really liked about Wuthering Heights, but then again, I might think differently of it now. Who knows? And yes, I know how you feel, I definitely have to be in the right mood.

melody-Wuthering Heights is very very long. There is not much happiness in it.

trish-well debi did say she likes it too, so I guess there are two of you :-)

I have Wuthering Heights and from the sound of it, I may be delaying reading until very much later... Hmmm... will see how things go.
